An international sprinter is helping Newham youngsters get fit and stay away from a life of crime.
Athlete Aidan Syers is coaching the free Newham Met-Track sessions for 10 to 17 year olds, which aim to reduce anti-social behaviour and offending.
Aidan, who has been involved in Met-Track schemes across the capital for the past eight years, says he is pleased that a new scheme has started in Newham, where he is a member of the Newham and Essex Beagles athletics club.
“As Newham is a club that has supported me for so long, to do something in the area is quite important to me,” he said.
“It can change youngsters’ lives because it teaches them discipline, commitment and hard work, as well as keeping them fit.
“It’s a really good vehicle for confidence as well as fitness and that, for me, is the biggest part of it.”
The sessions, organised in partnership with activeNewham and England Athletics, take place at Newham Leisure Centre on Wednesdays from 4pm to 5pm.
