Hollywood legend Sir Ian McKellan paid a visit to a Stratford sixth form.

The actor, whose credits include Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Magneto in the X-Men series, visited the London Academy of Excellence to speak to students and meet with members of the LGBT+ society.

The visit was organised by the High Streetschool in partnership with gay rights charity Stonewall.

A school spokeswoman said: “Two years ago a LGBT+ Network was set up in LAE as a student led initiative and has grown to be a successful and visible part of school life.

“They have promoted positive LGBT messages and have created an inclusive ethos within the school where students comfortable in openly being in same sex relationships within the school.”
