A decision on the proposed Silvertown tunnel has been delayed until May.
Paul Maynard, parliamentary under secretary of state for transport, explained that the six month extension was “to enable further consideration of the effect of the scheme on air quality”
The decision was originally due to be made by October, but was then delayed for a month - with that time limit set to expire on Friday.
Mr Maynard added: “The decision to set a new deadline is without prejudice to the decision on whether to give development consent.”
If approved, the road tunnel would link Silvertown and Greenwich, with construction beginning in 2019.
It would be big enough to allow buses to pass through, improving public transport connections between east and south east London.
