Shortlist of bidders for Silvertown tunnel contract announced

The three companies shortlisted to design and build the proposed Silvertown tunnel have been announced.
Transport for London has revealed Cintra Global Ltd, Hochtief PPP Solutions GmbH and Skanska Strabag are all in the running for the £1bn contract.
The winning bidder will also have to finance and maintain the twin-bore road tunnel between the Royal Docks and Greenwich, which is also expected to carry 37 buses an hour across the Thames.
As part of the tender, all contractors will be required to reduce the impact of construction in the surrounding area once work begins, expected to be in 2019.
This includes delivering more than half of all materials via the river, developing an extensive community engagemnt plan and creating around 150 apprenticeships for those living nearby.
Leon Daniels, managing director of surface transport at TfL, said: “It’s great to see such a strong shortlist of bidders to design, finance, build, and maintain the new Silvertown tunnel.
“The tunnel will be essential to help tackle congestion and reliability in east and south east London, as well as transform cross river bus services and support planned growth across the wider area.”
A six month planning review into the plans for the tunnel is currently underway and a decision on whether it will be granted approval is expected to be made this autumn.
Confirmation of the successful bidder will be made following this decision.
