Shoppers spent half a billion pounds over the Christmas period at Westfield’s London shopping centres last year.

The Australian company, which owns the Stratford City branch in Montfichet Road, raked in £660,000 in sales every hour over the two Saturdays before Christmas, a senior company representative said.

“Typically at Christmas everyone in retail talks about Super Saturday [the last Saturday before Christmas Day],” said Myf Ryan, chief marketing officer for Westfield UK and Europe.

“Last year the two pre-Christmas Saturdays were our busiest days of the year with close to 600,000 people passing through the doors of Westfield’s two London centres.”

By comparison, more than 350,000 shoppers visited the centres on Boxing Day.

Footfall should increase this year owing to Christmas Day falling on a Monday, Myf added.

The sites received 14 million visitors over the festive period.
