It’s taken Jay Simpson longer than he would have liked to open his O’s goal account, but now he is settled off the pitch he is hoping to deliver on it to help Orient move up the League One table.

The former Arsenal youngster returned to England in the summer following a spell in Thailand with Buriram United, and his partner was also expecting at the time of the move.

On top of that the O’s haven’t got off to the best possible start as they find themselves just above the relegation zone heading into Saturday’s game at Sheffield United.

But the striker grew in confidence on Tuesday night as his double saw Orient progress to the third round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with a 2-0 win over local rivals Dagenham & Redbridge.

And now he is up and running, Simpson hopes the O’s fans will start to see the best of him.

“It does take time to settle and it is a worrying one as well when you are waiting for your partner to give birth,” said Simpson.

“We had a game against Peterborough and it all kicked off then so I missed the game, but my family are settled now again and hopefully that can reflect on the pitch.

“I want everyone to know what I can do and when I get the chance I have to take it.

“Hopefully I have done enough to get the nod for Saturday and I can repay the faith again.”

Simpson admitted his move back to England hasn’t gone quite to plan so far, and he feels it has taken him a little long to get used to the different weather conditions in the UK compared to Thailand.

“When I came back for about four weeks I wasn’t doing anything,” he added. “I had a little knock and I wasn’t really training or playing so fitness wise I was down but with the heat the work you can do out there is limited so I knew I wasn’t match fit but training wise I felt good, but training to matches is a big difference.”

It’s been a season of contrast for the O’s who have yet to win at home, but find themselves unbeaten on their travels.

And while Simpson is keen to address the home issue, he hopes for a further away day success at Sheffield United this weekend.

“On the road we have been good and picking up points, but something is not working at home and we need to put that right,” he said.

“Sheffield will be tough on Saturday. They have a good squad but these are the games we should enjoy with a big crowd and I look forward to it.”
