A series of free events to celebrate Disability History Month will be held across Newham this winter.

The UK Disabled People’s Council (UKDPC) is launching the Together Festival of Disability Arts, Culture and Human Rights to keep awareness of disability issues alive.

The CEO of UKDPC Jaspal Dhani said: “Disability History Month provides the opportunity to build on the success of the Paralympics and raise awareness, not just of the issues facing disabled people today, but also of our history and heritage and our unique culture.”

The events include exhibitions, a film festival and a poetry week.

Organisations including the University of East London and Channel 4 have teamed up with UKDPC for the month.

Mr Dhani added: “Our motto is: ‘Together we can change our world’.

“We are pleased to be working with so many different organisations who support our goal of ensuring that all disabled people are enabled to reach their potential and to lead full and active lives as an integral part of our communities.”
