Labour’s candidate for mayor of London accused Boris Johnson of playing politics with people’s jobs in a visit London City Airport yesterday.

Member of Parliament for Tooting Sadiq Khan met with the airport’s management yesterday to discuss its expansion ambitions.

During his visit, he condemned the current mayor of London’s block of the airport’s expansion bid.

He said if he is elected mayor in 2016, he’d be open to expansion.

“When you look at what London City Airport is doing for the local community, the jobs they’re creating, but also the jobs they’re creating around London I think what you can’t do is play politics with decisions about people’s jobs and business,” he said. “What I would do if I was mayor of London is reconsider the decision by the mayor of London to oppose the plans the airport’s got.”

Newham Council approved the airport’s expansion plan in February, but Boris Johnson was able to override its decision, blocking it in March.

Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham, joined Sadiq Khan on the visit, after supporting the airport’s expansion and nominating it for the All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group’s (APCRG) National Responsible Business Champion award, which it won in July.
