A revamped centre will help “build stronger and more resilient communities” after it reopened to the public this week, according to Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales.

The Forest Gate Community Neighbourhood Centre, part of the Gate Library, now boasts bigger events spaces and a coffee shop run by local business Coffee 7 as well as free WiFi access.

The hub was up and running straight away with pupils from nearby Sandringham Primary School treated to a story telling session in the children’s library area while jobseekers were offered help and advice on improving their CVs and covering letters.

A special workshop was also hosted by local artist Sonya Patel-Ellis alongside a conversation club that helps people to speak English with more confidence.

Sir Robin said: “We want to build stronger and more resilient communities and enable them to play a full and active part in developing and enhancing their local areas.

Getting people involved in local groups, clubs and projects helps them meet new people and build a real community spirit. The improvements to this centre provide our residents in Forest Gate the perfect platform to achieve this aim.”

Cllr Ken Clark, cabinet member for building communities, public affairs, regeneration and planning, said there was a “real buzz” about the place, adding:“I have absolutely no doubt will that continue to grow in the future.”

The centre will be open from 9.30am to 5.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 9.30am to 8pm on Thursdays and will be closed on Sundays.
