Fallen police officer Nina Mackay, who was tragically killed in Stratford, was remembered at a memorial service on the 14th anniversary of her death.
Newham Police Borough Commander Chief Supt Simon Letchford, Councillor Unmesh Desai, Newham’s executive member for crime and anti-social behaviour, Nick Bracken, divisional director for community safety, and West Ham MP Lyn Brown were among those who gathered around her picture at the housing block where she was stabbed to honour her memory.
Pc Mackay was 25-years-old when she suffered fatal stab injuries as she and other officers from the Territorial Support Group attempting to arrest a wanted man from a flat in Arthingworth Street on October 24, 1997.
During a short speech, Mr Letchford said: “She lived in East London and came from a family with a strong tradition of police service.
“By all accounts, Nina was a remarkable young woman, open-minded, vivacious and determined.
“I hope you will join me in reflecting on the ultimate sacrifice shown by Nina in the service to the people of Newham and London as a whole.
“I know Nina’s memory will live on amongst her police colleagues and the public for generations to come.”
Cllr Desai said: “Police officers put on their uniform every day and risk their lives to protect us. Some pay the ultimate price to ensure our safety.
“We must never forget their bravery and commitment. This is an occasion to remember Nina and the courage that she showed.”
A road close to the scene has been named Nina Mackay Close in tribute to the brave police officer and the Metropolitan Police memorial garden in Hendon is home to a Valiant Heart rose named after her.
Magdi Elgizouli, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, is being kept at Rampton top security mental hospital under the Mental Health Act with no time limit.
