The nation will be celebrating a new record today as the Queen officially becomes the longest reigning monarch the United Kingdom has ever seen.
Taking the throne in 1952 at the age of 25, Queen Elizabeth II has set a new royal record by serving 63 years, seven months and three days.
The monarch has now reigned longer than her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria who served for 63 years, seven months, and two days.
In recent years the Queen has visited the borough on a number of occasions.
On July 27, 2012, millions of viewers watched as she visited the Olympic Stadium to open the London 2012 Games.
Many were led to believe Her Majesty made her entrance by jumping out of a helicopter – a stunt that was performed by professional Gary Connery.
A day later, she headed back to the borough to unveil a plaque at London City Airport.
Newham mayor, Sir Robin Wales, said: “This was the second time I had welcomed the Queen to Newham in as many days.
“The previous days she had attended the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games and I am just pleased I did not have to jump out of the helicopter with her during the opening ceremony.
“When I met her the next day I told her how impressed I was by her epic feat the night before and she was amused by that.”
In 2002, the Queen met with crowds in Green Street as she visited the Boleyn Ground to open the West Stand.
She also opened the new business school at the University of East London campus in Royal Albert Dock in 2007.
