A trio of students have found a healthy way to keep history alive - by walking through it.

Art and politics students Rosie Bowery, Luke Gregory-Jones and Poppy Trivedi are inviting members of the public to join them on a three mile walk and share their knowledge of the area’s history.

The free walk starts at Stratford tube station and winds through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park before ending with a bonfire at the Hackney Community Tree Nursery in Hackney Marshes.

“We would love to have people from the area come so they can tell us about their experience living here,” 21-year-old Poppy said.

“I love walking around London. I like how there’s so much going on. It’s a tapestry of different places,” she added.

Simon Cole, who organises walking tours for Hackney Council, will join the city-based ramblers sharing his own observations of Newham’s past as well as Julian Cheyne from the Clays Lane Estate, demolished in 2007 to make way for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Poppy added: “There’s been such a radical transformation of the area. Behind the shiny exteriors there’s more. But it’s the people who make up a space, not just the buildings.”

The walk, which starts at 3pm on Friday, March 17, is open to anyone who wants to join in.
