A pub under refurbishment was damaged by fire yesterday.
Neighbours raised the alarm after spotting smoke rising from the building in Star Lane, Canning Town, at about 7.20pm.
Watch manager Paul Fraser, who was at the scene, said: “Fire crews had to break into the fenced-off building site to gain access, but once inside the area the fire was quickly brought under control.”
He said crews confined the fire to the ground floor, which was slightly damaged by the blaze.
Four fire engines and 20 firefighters and officers from Plaistow, East Ham, Stratford and Millwall fire stations attended the incident.
The fire was under control shortly after 8pm. It’s cause is under investigation.
