Whether you’ve managed to make it into work this morning after a nightmare journey (well done) or if you’re reading this at home having taken the laptop back with you yesterday (wise), the Tube strike has had an impact on your day.

For those not sure what it’s all about, members of three unions (RMT, Unit and TSSA) are on strike in an ongoing dispute over pay and conditions regarding the Night Tube.

The new service, set to arrive in September, will see trains running all night on Fridays and Saturdays on five lines with 137 new drivers employed to cope with the added demand. As well as faster night time journeys it is expected to bring at least 2,000 new jobs in London and a £360m boost to the economy.

Unlike earlier this year, this latest strike that began yesterday at 6pm and is due to end at the same time this evening, has crippled the London Underground network leaving London at a standstill.

It came after union members voted for strike action, with RMT Union general secretary Mick Cash claiming new working patterns for Tube staff would “wreck work-life balance and leave staff in safety critical jobs burnt out and stressed out at a time when tube services are facing unprecedented demand”.

But Mike Brown, Managing Director of London Underground, has said a new offer made ahead of the strike has yet to be put to members, adding strike action was “unnecessary”.

In a message today he said Night Tube lines and stations staff would get £500 “once the Night Tube is in place” and train drivers would receive an extra £2,000 on top of this “where transitional arrangements apply”.

“But the leaderships of the unions flatly refused to respond,” he added. “They also refused to put the new offer to their members, which is extraordinary given that it is a very different offer to the one over which they were originally balloted.

“Instead, they strike. These things are only sorted out around a table – not by inflicting misery on hard working Londoners.”
