Plans to build a mega-mosque in West Ham have been shelved by the government, it has been reported.

While the plan has not yet been officially rejected, a number of reports have emerged claiming sources close to the scheme have confirmed it has been blocked.

Newham Council voted unanimously to reject plans for a 9,000 capacity building at the Abbey Mills Riverine Centre in December 2012.

The decision was appealed and a three week planning inquiry was held last year, with the outcome expected to be revealed soon.

This was set to give then Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles, the final say on the Anjuman-E-Islahul-Muslimeen Trust’s plans.

The Canning Road site has been owned by the Trust since 1996 and is regularly used by around 3,000 worshippers.

A Newham Council spokeswoman said: “The Secretary of State has not formally issued a decision on the outcome of the planning inquiry in to the Abbey Mills Riverine Centre.

“This is a significant decision and until we receive the detailed judgement we are unable to comment any further.”
