Newham is going to back the polls – just six months after the local election.

Today is the by-election for Boleyn ward, which was triggered after councillor Veronica Oakeshott stepped down in September.

The councillor, who’d represented Boleyn for three years, moved away to be closer to family.

Voters today have the choice between Fazlul Karim for the Conservatives, Arunasalam Pirapaharan for the Lib Dems, Frankie-Rose Taylor for the Green Party, and Labour’s Moniba Khan.

Mr Pirapaharan previously stood as a candidate in the May 2014 elections, where he contested the Wall End ward, while Ms Taylor stood unsuccessfully in a 2015 by-election.

The winner will join Labour’s Genevieve Kitchen and Harvinder Singh Virdee in representing Boleyn.

Once the new representative is elected, it will bring the number of councillors in Newham back up to 60. The result is expected to be announced at around 11.30pm.
