A plane was forced to make an emergency return to London City Airport this morning when part of its wing fell off.

The pilot abandoned the 7.25am CityJet flight to Florence moments after take-off, before circling the Thames Estuary and touching back down in the Docklands.

Many of the 61 Passengers on board the Avro RJ85 plane heard a loud bang before a six foot-long section of the left wing fell away.

A spokesperson for CityJet said: “The crew followed their standard procedures and, after a discussion with CityJet Maintenance Control, decided to return to London City Airport.

“Air Traffic Control were notified and the aircraft returned making a normal approach and landing. Passengers were re-directed on another aircraft and departed with a two hour delay.”
