Students at a Newham school have been preparing 100 hampers full of festive goodies to distribute to elderly people.

The youngsters from Cumberland School, in Oban Close, Plaistow, will be delivering the seasonal offerings to the Community Resource Centre, Chargeable Lane, Plaistow for the elderly who will be entertained with Carols from the Cumberland Cares Christmas Choir.

The hampers and the community spirited action by the students is part of their Cumberland Cares at Christmas Charity Appeal, now in its fourth year.

The event has become a Cumberland tradition. The school has raised thousands of pounds for children related charities such as the Richard House Hospice and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Last year, students prepared and sent 100 shoeboxes across the world full of sweets and toys as part of the Operation Christmas Child appeal.
