Staff at Plaistow underground station managed to exceed their expectations this Thursday by raising £729 for charity, £229 over their original set target.

The clan dressed up as children’s character’s Mr Blobby and Barney the Dinosaur and shook their buckets for donations for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Plaistow station supervisor, Ricky Gregory, 44, donated his salary for the day while other members of staff gave up their time to come in early and assist with the fundraising.

Ricky organised the event with the station’s customer service assistant Karen Healy. The pair said they plan to hold another fundraiser in September and added: “we are very emotional and touched by how much was raised and want to thank you all for your kind and generous donations.”

Helping make the event a success local shops chipped in by contributing beverages and snacks and Ricky’s wife Karen supplied freshly baked sausage rolls.

Surprises on the day included a £100 donation from Karen Healy’s father-in-law, David, and each of her two son’s Charlie and George donating £5 from their pocket money saying: “it was for a good cause”.
