A University of East London lecturer has been given an Inspirational Woman Award for her work mentoring female students and athletes.
Marcia Wilson, 48, from Plaistow, said winning the award earlier this month “came as a shock”.
The head of sports science at the Newham-based university said: “The day was amazing and incredibly positive, there were lots of women sharing some real amazing stories that they’ve had to over come to get where they are.
“It was just one of those days where you felt a breath of new life.”
Her award, in the Pay it Forward category, is given to a woman who has excelled in their field and is also helping other women to succeed.
She added: “It came as a shock because I met a few of the women before and when they shared their stories I just thought ‘wow’. They were all so humbling with great stories, so it was a big surprise really.”
With Marcia intending to go back to next year’s event, she explains her favourite part of her work.
“My best memories are just working with athletes and my students and seeing how they transform in the few years they are with us at the University.
“Seeing them get degrees and excellent jobs makes my job very fulfilling.”
