Firefighters were called to a shop blaze in Plaistow in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze in the grocery shop, in Queen’s Road, after a member of the public spotted smoke rising from the building.

Half of the single-storey shop was damaged by the blaze.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters from Plaistow, East Ham and Stratford fire engines attended the incident at about 12.30am.

The fire was brought under control by about 2.30am.

Crew Manager Adam Stone who was at the fire said: “The alarm was raised by a member of the public who spotted smoke rising from the building. Fire crews worked hard to bring the fire under control. Fortunately, the shop was empty when the fire began and no one was injured.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
