Runners of all ages turned out at the Terence McMillan Stadium in memory of a young athlete who died in an accident nearly 20 years ago.
Around 120 people took part in the Sarah Hammond Memorial Fun Run, which was organised by family and friends as a way to remember the 24-year-old and raise money in her name.
Sarah’s mother Marie said that she hoped to raise £2,000 for Barts Charity, which supports research and equipment for the hospitals within Barts Health NHS Trust.
Marie added: “There were lots of children and families, which was great to see.”
She presented the fastest finishers in each category with a prize, while everyone that crossed the finish line was handed a medal for participating.
The fun run, now in its 18th year, is a five kilometre run around the stadium, attached to Newham Leisure Centre where Sarah worked.
She was a founder member of the East End Road Runners club and competed for Newham and Essex Beagles for several years before her death in August 1997.
