The 114 students from 16 secondary schools and colleges gathered at the Theatre Royal, Stratford, to celebrate their successes on Wednesday.

The Recorder’s news editor, Russ Lawrence, presented them with a medallion to go with their previously received certificate and £200 cheque.

He said: “What a wonderful advert for the young people of Newham.

“All too often the younger generation are portrayed in a negative light.

“But the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards emphasise the positive aspects of the borough’s young people and remind us that the vast majority are kind, caring, thoughtful and upstanding citizens who make a valuable contribution to society and who deserve recognition.”

The Jack Petchey Foundation recognises young people aged 11 to 25 who have achieved their potential in some way, and has awarded £4.5 million to youth organisations in Newham since funding started in 1999.

Six teachers were also honoured with special leader awards for their outstanding motivation.

Performers from several of the schools entertained winners and their families.

Singer and guitarist Ashley Singh from St Bonaventure’s took to the stage, as did dancers from Plashet Girls School and a choir from St Angela’s Ursuline.

VIPs attending the event included the Deputy Mayor of Newham, Cllr Lester Hudson.

He said: “I tremendously enjoyed the awards event. The looks of joy of the winners, parents and friends greatly added to the enjoyment of the evening. “The award winners are an excellent example of the inspirational nature of the young people in Newham.”
