VE Day celebrations continued on Friday when the mayor of Newham, Second World War veterans and residents attended a VE Day themed tea dance.

More than 150 people attended the dance at Old Town Hall Stratford as part of the council’s calendar of events to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of war in Europe.

Guests danced to music from the era before being treated to an afternoon tea, observed a two minute silence and had the opportunity to look at exhibition Newham’s War: The Second World War (1939-45) in East Ham and West Ham which was on display.

The exhibition will remain on show at Stratford Library until Sunday, May 31.

Veterans from Manor Park British Legion and members of G Company 7 Rifles were among those who attended the event.

“It was an incredible and humbling experience meeting people who lived through the war and VE Day in 1945,” mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales said.

“Their stories really drove home how lucky we are today.

“The event helped evoke a spirit of the time and it was a tremendous pleasure joining everyone taking part in the celebrations.”
