Pictures: Boxing champion Nicola Adams visits Fight For Peace

The Commonwealth Games champion was at Fight For Peace yesterday to announce her new role as the charity’s ambassador.

She met young people who are part of the North Woolwich academy’s youth council and heard about the work the charity does in providing an education and life skills as well as somewhere to meet friends and box.

Nicola also joined in with some of the action in the boxing gym, much to the delight of the youngsters she sparred with.

She said she was “really proud” to become an ambassador for Fight For Peace and wanted to encourage more young people, especially girls, to take up the sport.

She added: “It is a fantastic charity which helps young people move away from crime and learn vital life skills, by combining boxing and martial arts with education and personal development.

“I really hope I can help to make a difference to young people’s lives.”

Fight For Peace was initially set up in 2000 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by former amateur boxer Luke Dowdney.

In 2007 he founded the London academy and now over 2700 young people are supported across the two countries each year.

Luke said: “It is a real honour to have Nicola Adams as an ambassador for Fight for Peace as she is an inspirational role model for young people across the country.

“It’s been fantastic to see Nicola engage with our members today and we look forward to working closely with Nicola to raise our profile, improve our offering and help look after more young people at Fight for Peace.”

The charity could even see an Olympic competitor next year in young Brazilian boxer Roberto Custodio, who is hoping to qualify for his home games - where Nicola is hoping to add yet another gold to her collection.
