More than 600 over 55-year-olds took part in nine sports during the competition held for the first time at the Copper Box Arena on Friday. It was won overall by the 55 Plus Club team from Greenwich.

Watching over the action were Team GB table tennis plater Darius Knight and 400m relay Commonwealth gold-medallist Daniel Awde.

Sports included badminton, darts, table tennis, short and long mat bowls, dominoes, short tennis, timed cycling and timed swimming. The event was hosted by GLL, under its Better brand name.

GLL boss Peter Bundey said it was a “great example of the Olympic legacy in action and proof that it really does offer something for everyone, regardless of age”.

Val Oliver, 55 Plus Club leader from Greenwich said: “I’m so proud of our team and the huge effort they put in to win. It was a fun but very competitive day and to have beaten 16 other teams is a great achievement.

“Being on the Olympic Park was particularly special, the venues were inspiring and definitely encouraged everyone to up their game.”
