Tube passengers travelling to Stratford on the Central line this morning were hit by delays after a fire alert.

A train at Leyton station was taken out of service at about 7am after a driver reported smelling smoke.

Passengers were led off the train with no reported problems and the line was suspended in both directions between Woodford, Newbury Park and Liverpool Street.

It meant visitors to the Olympic Park were forced to use the Jubilee line and London Overground to get to Stratford.

A Tfl spokesman said the Central line was now up and running but commuters have been warned to watch out for severe delays and use other routes.

He said: “During the suspension our staff on the ground advised Olympic spectators to use a range of other services to reach the venues at Stratford, including Hammersmith & City line services, which interchange with the DLR, and Greater Anglia rail services.

“London Underground tickets were accepted on local bus services and Greater Anglia, and everyone was able to get to their events.”
