Nursery and new homes for former Upton Centre site

Two years after it closed, plans for the redevelopment of the former Upton Centre site will be available to view at a public exhibition.
The proposals, drawn up by Steven Taylor Architects Ltd, will be on display in Green Street and Plaistow libraries for two days.
The plans include a community centre, nursery and affordable housing on the Claude Road site, in Upton Park, which were among the key issues highlighted by residents during a public consultation on the future use of the site last year.
Newham Council were forced to close the centre, which supported 16 community groups, in December 2014 after specialist engineers advised the council that the boilers were no longer compliant and the heating system could not be used.
The centre would have cost £3.5 million to make it fit for community use, and after a six week public consulation the council decided to demolish it and build a new one on the site.
Lead member for Plaistow, Cllr Hanif Abdulmuhit, said: “Closing the Upton Centre was not a decision that was taken lightly – but the building was not fit for purpose.
“We have always been committed to making the best use of the site to meet the needs of the local community. This public exhibition is a key step in helping towards achieving this ambition and I urge as many people as possible to go along and see and find out more about the proposals.”
Representatives of the architects will be discussing the proposals at Plaistow library from 4.30pm to 5.30pm on Monday, December 12, as well as at 12.30pm to 1.45pm on Saturday, December 17.
They will also be at Green Street Library from 6pm to 7pm on Monday, December 12, and from 2.15pm to 3.30pm on Saturday, December 17.
The views expressed will help to shape a planning application for the site that is due to be submitted early next year.
