A budding journalist was crowned winner of this year’s competition to find the next bright young thing to takeover a newsroom.

Nasaybah Hussain, 18, from Newham, won the Breaking Into News initiative, aimed at discovering new talent and increasing diversity in broadcast journalism.

Nasaybah worked closely with assistant news editor at ITV London news, Chloe Keedy, and developed her idea on whether accents have an impact on future job prospects.

After the mentoring period Nasaybah and the other finalists pitched their news reports to a high-profile judging panel.

She said: “I have learnt just what it takes to create a newsworthy story, all the hard work and research that it involves and how each little detail contributes to a story.

“I would highly recommend anyone who is thinking about pursuing a career in journalism to apply for this initiative because it truly is an amazing experience, one that gives you a real insight into the everyday life of a broadcast journalist.”

She added: “It has made me realise that this is exactly what I want to do as a career.”

The initiative, now in its third year, offers 18 to 25-year-olds the chance to be mentored by experienced broadcast journalists from the ITV News network newsroom in writing, reporting and production skills.

It was run in partnership by ITV News and Media Trust.

Nasaybah was awarded the title at a formal presentation event at ITV News London.

She was presented with an iPad and will spend the day with the team producing ITV News at Ten.

Robin Elias, Managing Editor of ITV News, said: “The standard of entries was extremely high and all the finalists displayed a great deal of talent, so it was a difficult choice, but in the end the judges were unanimous in their praise for Nasaybah.

“Her final news report shows real creativity and skill - she should be really proud of what she has achieved.”

Katie Lloyd, Deputy Chief Executive at Media Trust, said: “Nasaybah is a deserving winner and impressed us all with her quirky news report and outstanding pitch.”
