More pregnant women and ‘at risk’ people have been getting the flu jab in Newham than in any other part of London.

The borough exceeds the capital average in both groups, with 54.3 per cent of Newham’s pregnant women and 62.7pc of ‘at risk’ people getting the jab, compared to the London-wide figures of 39.8pc and 49.6pc respectively.

Those in the latter category include those with diabetes or other long-term health conditions that could cause complications.

Nearly three quarters of Newham’s over 65s received the flu jab this winter, which was again higher than the London figure of 68.7pc.

There were also more children aged between two and four vaccinated than in any other borough.

Dr Zuhair Zarifa, chair of NHS Newham Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It is great to be number one for flu fighting for the second year in a row.

“I am particularly proud of mums-to-be making the effort to get the jab as it means more babies are born in Newham that have flu protection for the first vital months.

All GP surgeries in Newham offer the flu jab free of charge to people with an increased risk of developing serious complications if they catch it.
