Young carers have spent the summer working on a visual arts project that has helped form a support network.

They were brought together by arts charity Create to explore the theme of identity through a variety of media.

They were able to experiment with photography, sculpture and paint thanks to funding from Newham Giving.

Their work then featured in an exhibition for friends and family.

Co-founder and chief executive of Create, Nicky Goulder, said: “The demands of caring for a disabled or unwell relative can significantly impact a young person’s confidence in social situations.

“It was fantastic to see young carers from Newham collaborating to create such imaginative artworks. Well done to them all.”

Sixty eight per cent of young carers suffer bullying, isolation or strained relationships as a result of their caring role.

The Create project aims to give them the chance to develop their confidence and social skills with others who understand their responsibilities.
