Hundreds of people soaked up the sun and enjoyed playing in the sand over the weekend as Royal Victoria Dock was transformed into London’s biggest man made beach.
It was a case of sand castles and ice cream as Royal Victoria beach returned to Newham with the help of 200 tonnes of sand which transformed the area into an urban seaside resort
Its inspiration comes from the annual Paris Plage where areas along the river Seine are transformed to Riviera-style settings.
The beach, which is big enough to fit ten London buses on it, will host a range of family activities including theatre performances, arts workshops, live music and of course a Punch and Judy.
It will run until August 31 and will be open from 10am until 8pm. There will also be a picnic on August 7 which Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales is expected to attend.
He said: “Life really will be a beach for everyone at the Royal Docks this summer. This is London’s most unique entertainment space, just yards from a DLR station.”
