Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales has offered heartfelt condolences to anyone caught up in or affected by the Glasgow helicopter crash at the weekend.

He has written to Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson to express sympathy on behalf of councillors, staff and residents of Newham.

He said: “Everyone at Newham Council is shocked and saddened by the tragic helicopter crash. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this dreadful incident.

“Newham has a strong bond with the City of Glasgow as we look to pass on our learnings from the 2012 Games to you as you host of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The clearly outstanding efforts of your staff and the people of Glasgow as you dealt with the unfolding tragedy in the full glare of the nation’s media were remarkable. Please pass our thoughts and best wishes to everyone concerned.”
