Holocaust Memorial Day will be commemorated at Newham town hall on Monday.
Newham Council has organised the event which will include a performance of Remember Me, the story of a journey made by a group of children to the Treblinka German Nazi extermination camp in occupied Poland, by Stars Orchestra and Stars Choir.
Children from schools across the borough will read stories and poetry as well as testimonies written by Holocaust survivors.
Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales said: “This harrowing chapter in our world’s history should never be forgotten, which is why we commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.
“It is tragic that despite the horrors of the Holocaust similar atrocities have taken place since. Holocaust Memorial Day recognises not only those who lost their lives under Nazi persecution but remembers those communities which were destroyed in subsequent genocides including Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.”
Residents can join local councillors and invited guests at the event which starts at 10.30 am.
Last weekend Sir Robin joined Rabbi Thomas Salamon, from Westminster Synagogue, at a candle-lighting ceremony at Boleyn Ground to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.
Holocaust survivor and Olympic weightlifter Ben Helgott, West Ham United joint chairman David Gold, board member Daniel Harris and East Ham Royal British Legion branch secretary Ken Hill also lit candles before West Ham’s match against Newcastle United.
