About 100 people attended a vigil in Newham Town Hall, East Ham, organised to coincide with Human Rights Day and mark an end of the United Nation’s 16 Days of Action campaign that aimed to raise awareness of violence against women.

Newham Council has been actively supporting the UN’s campaign over the fortnight with members pledging “never to commit, condone or stay silent about violence against women” on social media. They were joined by charity groups and individual residents.

Cllr Lakmini Shah said: “This vigil enabled us to show our support for those facing abuse and those who have sadly died as a result. It sent a clear message that violence and abuse against women is totally unacceptable.

“With the festive season now upon us it is even more pertinent as this is a time domestic violence often takes place.

“The focus of the vigil was on women but we know men are also victims of abuse and violence. Our support services are available to anyone who needs them. Only by standing together can we bring an end to all forms of domestic abuse.”

Current figures show that about one in four women experience domestic violence in the UK.

In Newham, there were 3,227 crimes related to domestic violence over a year to September. During the same period, more than 1,600 referrals were made to Newham Council’s free and confidential One Stop Service.

The service is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year and provides support anyone experiencing domestic or sexual violence. Contact the One Stop Shop on 0845 451 2547 or visit newham.gov.uk/dsv for more information.
