Newham Council is raising a special flag at both of its Town Halls in recognition of the seventh Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

The Armed Forces Flag will be being raised all week at Newham Town Hall in East Ham and the Old Town Hall in Stratford and will stay there until Saturday.

Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham, said the flags are flow to “salute the armed forces”.

He added: “We value everything they do for us because they sacrifice a great deal to keep us safe.

“We should continue to be proud of those servicemen and women who call Newham home, who have previously served or are currently serving. We respect their continued bravery in the things that we ask them to do.

“Showing our support is even more appropriate this year as we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

“In November we will again show our respects on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday with services to remember those from generations past as well as those who continue to fall in conflicts and wars.”

Armed Forces Day raises public awareness of the contribution made by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.

It offers an opportunity for people to show their support for the men and women who make up the armed forces community including Regulars, Reservists, veterans, cadets, and their families.
