Newham crime victims get online report service

PUBLISHED: 15:50 04 March 2012

A new website allowing street robbery and assault victims to report the crimes online has gone live.

Streetviolence.org, hosted by the charity Witness Confident, will operate across London free of charge for the next year.

It comes as the number of robberies in Newham in 2011 rose when compared to the previous year - with the total number standing at 2,406.

The site will provide information about the circumstances of the incident and those involved.

Viewers will be able to see what time it is reported to have taken place, and whether the attacker was a stranger.

Police will also be able to update posts on the site with arrests and convictions.

Guy Dehn, director of Witness Confident, said: “The site is a welcome alternative to hanging behind at the scene, standing around at a police station or waiting in line at a call centre.”
