Newham Council is set to petition the Government to save a High Speed 2 link in Stratford.

It is calling for ministers to consider using Stratford International as a gateway for business growth by connecting HS2 with HS1, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.

The plea comes after a recent review by Sir David Higgins, chairman of HS2, which led the government to confirm that it is taking steps to remove the previously agreed link.

Councillor Conor McAuley, executive member for regeneration and strategic planning said: “It is vital for both Newham and national viability of the scheme that there is a link between the new line and the existing HS1 line. Without a link the scheme as a whole will be severely curtailed.”

Newham Council’s concerns are shared by a range of public and private partners including Transport for London, the Canary Wharf Group, Westfield and AEG, owners of the O2.
