With a predicted cold snap on the way, Newham council has taken steps to ensure roads are as clear and as safe as possible.

The council has created a Winter Maintenance Plan, and believe they have sufficient salt and gritters that can be fitted with snow ploughs if necessary, with gritters also available to work on the A13 Newham Way.

Many of the busiest roads have been pre-treated with salt as a priority basis, starting with bus routes and main roads that carry more than 1,500 cars an hour at peak times.

Pavements around areas such as town centres, rail stations, old people’s homes and schools will also have priority should snow and ice persist.

Cllr Ian Corbett, executive member for infrastructure and environment, said: “We can all take steps to make sure we are able to manage.

“Whether it’s having heating systems checked or looking out for elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbours, staying off the roads or stocking up on essential foods, together we can help keep Newham moving.”
