Newham Council has issued a warning about fake emails asking people to update their bank details.

The messages, which appear to be sent from the council, request that people click a link in order to fill in the new details.

Newham Council said that it only sends requests to people to update their information if they have been contacted about it by the resident.

It does not send messages asking for confirmation of any details.

Anyone receiving an email from Newham Council requesting this information that they were not expecting should not download any attachments or click on any links in the email.

If anyone is unsure whether the email they have received is genuine they can check by calling the council on 020 8430 2000.
