Newham Council shook up its Christmas lunch service this month to help elderly residents beat the winter blues.

In place of a one-off delivery of basic groceries, the local authority hoped to bring them together for a traditional turkey lunch.

Vegetarian and vegan options were also available for guests, who included those over the age of 80, living alone or on low incomes.

The lunches took place at Community Neighbourhood Centres in Green Street, East Ham, Manor Park, Beckton and Royal Docks, Plaistow, Forest Gate, Stratford and West Ham, and Custom House and Canning Town.

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz and Stephen Timms, the MPs for East Ham, went along to the Green Street meal on Monday.

“It was fabulous to see so many of our older residents enjoying a proper festive celebration, with turkey and all the trimmings,” said Ms Fiaz.

Attendees also received a festive goody bag containing biscuits, sweets, chocolates and mince pies.
