When Heritier Mandungo, 24, arrived in east London from Congo he had asylum status and was sleeping on his sister’s sofa with no job and no idea what to do next.

But the Team Programme, a 12-week personal development course run by The Prince’s Trust at Newham College, helped Heritier learn English, make friends and find a new purpose in life.

Heritier, who has gained resident status, now wants to encourage others to do the same.

“I share my experience with other young people so that they can feel encouraged to take part in opportunities which really can change their life, like me,” he said.

“Nearly half of the students currently enrolled on the Team Programme at Newham College were referred by me, which is something I’m very proud of!

“I felt like no one else would help, so I’m thankful to The Prince’s Trust for everything they did for me.

“I now know I want to pursue a career in youth work and I’m feeling positive about the future.”
