A cheerleading group from Newham are featuring in a production of Shakespeare’s Pericles.
The play, running at the National Theatre on the South Bank from August 26 to 28, is being produced by Public Acts, an initiative which aims to involve community groups with theatres.
There will be more than 200 people from various organisations performing in the play, including a troupe from Ascension Eagles, a cheerleading charity based in Beckton.
Alongside the cheerleaders, there’ll be cameos from Faithworks Gospel Choir, the London Bulgarian Choir, dance companies Manifest Nation, The Archetype Dance Team and The Bhavan, and music group The Youthsayers.
Organisations are chosen which reflect the cultural diversity of London, and they’ll perform alongside professional actors and musicians.
Public Acts’ Emily Lim said: “Public Acts is founded on the belief that theatre can be a force for change, bringing communities together to experience the power of collective purpose and imagination.”
