Charities and community organisations across the borough have received more than £100,000 from a fund set up to support Newham residents.

The fund’s aim is to help organisations based in the borough working in education, art, dance music, sport, and the environment that demonstrate value for money and deliver inclusive projects.

The Aspers Good Causes Fund was set up by Aspers Casino and Newham Council to support community projects that enable residents to build their confidence and skills.

Nine organisations have been successful and received more than £100,000. They include Fight For Peace, based in London and Brazil. They have secured £16k to deliver a holistic project combining boxing and martial arts with personal development to support young people to develop their leadership skills and employability.

Groundwork London has received £16,000 to turn a derelict piece of land into a Ghandi Garden. Working with Newham Young Stars youth group, the peace garden will also give ex-offenders the opportunity to carry out paid work and gain qualifications in landscape gardening.

East London Community Sports Association delivers a range of rugby and sports opportunities. The extra £4k funding they benefitted from will enable them to extend their programme and provide a range of coaching courses and referee development.

Almost £9,000 was allocated to Newham Super Choir to support them in expanding their group. The choir will use its funding to develop a new website, improve rehearsals, run taster sessions for residents and deliver a number of public performances.

Part of the fund was allocated to schools for wildlife conservation activities.

Sir Robin Wales Mayor of Newham said: “The Good Causes Fund is the latest benefit to our community which enables them to deliver a range of sustainable programmes and provide support where it is needed most. I would encourage any organisation based in the borough carrying out innovative work to apply.

“We’ll continue to work with Aspers to develop new ways to invest in the community and support local people.”

An additional £60,000 is available this year to projects that deliver sporting or environmental activities. The application deadline is November 15 2013. To apply online and find out more, go to www.newham.gov.uk/aspersfund
