An independent bookshop in Upton Park has called on authors to donate signed copies of their works to help crowdfund its new home.

Newham Bookshop, in Barking Road, announced on Twitter managers “need to raise a lot” to pay for the planned move, which will see its adult shop leapfrog its children section by shifting two doors down the road.

“Any authors who could donate a signed book that we could auction, we need to raise a lot to pay for our move, our landlord is building offices in our present shop,” the shop tweeted earlier this morning, urging users of the social media site to share the message.

While manager Vivian Archer declined to comment, tweets suggest the shop will begin a crowdfunding campaign for the move in the near future.

Television chef Nigella Lawson and Lyn Brown, the MP for West Ham, have encouraged others to support the appeal.

The bookshop was “a cornucopia of fabulousness” that does “an amazing job in our community”, said Ms Brown.
