The money, from the L&Q Foundation, will allow the Newham All Star Sports Academy (NASSA) to offer free basketball training sessions for young people aged seven and over, including one at Rokeby School, Canning Town.

In addition, anyone aged 14 or over will be able to gain accredited sporting qualifications and take part in work placements.

Natasha Hart, chief executive of NASSA, said: “The take-up for the clubs has been fantastic and we are excited to see all our new attendees boosting their confidence and sporting abilities.

“Thanks to this grant, we can help to meet that demand and start to train the next generation of qualified coaches and officials.”

Matthew Corbett, assistant director of community investment for L&Q, added: “We want young people in our communities to have the opportunity to develop their passion for sport and enjoy the benefits of leading a healthy, active lifestyle.

“We are pleased to be supporting grassroots level sport in east London and working with our partners NASSA to provide fun and sociable activities for young people.”
