Newham’s newest street market got off to a colourful start when it was officially opened to the public on Saturday.

East Ham MP Stephen Timms and Deputy Mayor Cllr Lester Hudson cut the ribbon at Pilgrims Way Market to officially open the market along with a juggling unicyclist, a troop of majorettes, and a choir.

Starting life as a temporary event, the market will now be a permanent fixture after proving popular with residents and traders.

Pilgrim’s Way Market boasts 15 stallholders selling fruit and vegetables, handmade jewellery, clothing, confectionary and more.

There are also plans to expand the market in response to rising demand for more stalls.

Cllr Lester Hudson said: “It’s fantastic to be able to support this exciting new addition to our borough.

“The traders that are part of the market are making our community a vibrant place and we hope more traders will be joining them.

“What’s also great is that residents are doing their bit to support them to keep the tradition of London’s brilliant markets alive.

“We’re committed to making Pilgrims Way Market a thriving success and wish everyone the best for the future.”

Pilgrim’s Way Market is open on Pilgrims Way, off Ron Leighton Way, East Ham from Thursday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm.
