A new community space was officially named yesterday at its grand opening.

Carpenter’s Cage in Stratford is a new multi use games area designed for the whole community.

And its new name was proposed by resident Janine Paul who entered the naming competition at yesterdays event.

The unveiling was attended by more than 240 people who enjoyed activities including a penalty shoot out run by West Ham United, a basketball competition run by London Lions, a BBQ, face painting and a bouncy castle.

The site of the multi use games area was used during the London 2012 Olympics. Following the games, the site was handed to the London Legacy Development Corporation, which has been working with Genesis Housing Association to create a multi use area for the community.

Soifur Rahman, senior youth development officer at Genesis, said: “It was a really good day and the event was a massive success.

“This new centre is important as there was nowhere for our residents, especially young people, to play but the area now provides a safe space and parents know where their children are.”

The area already has sports courts and there are plans to add a picnic area, community garden and a Wallball.
