Jakub Lenczewski, 32, opened Polonezz, in Woodgrange Road, on Saturday, stocking everything from fruit and dairy to fish.

Built on the site of a former Skoda garage, he hopes to offer free morning coffees from the shop, to go with the range of doughnuts and croissants on offer.

“There’s actually quite a big difference in flavour between English and Polish food,” he explained.

“Even with something like milk, the taste is still really quite different and when you first come over you just want to smell and taste what you’ve grown up with.

“Although I’ve been here for 14 years now and consider England my home, we still wanted to open shops to sell these products, not just for Polish people but for the wider community.”

After opening up a shop in Croydon three-and-a-half years ago, Jakub, with business partner Marcin Kuziola, 41, launched a second in Palmers Green and insists Forest Gate’s diverse make-up made it the perfect spot.
