Emerging artistic talent in the East End is to be recognised through a newly created prize.

The East London Painting Prize, which launched at the beginning of this month, is open to both upcoming and established artists living or working in the London boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets, Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Redbridge and Waltham Forest.

The winning artist will receive a £10,000 cash prize and a the opportunity to have a prominent solo show at the Nunnery Gallery, Bow.

The prize honours the life and work of ken amateur painter and philanthropist Jack Goldhill, a chief figure in the post-Second World War reconstruction of Britain and in particular London’s East End, who died in November 2009.

It has been created by The Legacy list, the charity of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in association with the Goldhill Family and Bow Arts.

Michael Goldhill said: “We are looking forward to working with The Legacy List and Bow Arts to ensure that the next generation of contemporary artists come from this creative source of London.”

Marcel Baettig, chief executive of Bow Arts said: “We’re thrilled to part of this fantastic new prize that supports local artists and that firmly cements east London as the capital for culture.”

The full panel of judges for the competition is to be announced in the coming weeks but presently includes artist and painter Varda Caivano, senior curator Maitreyi Maheshwari, art advisor Sarah Elson, as well as editor and curator Matt Price.
